How a Day Trip from Naples Works

From pickup in Naples to the drive home along the coast.

  1. Pickup in Naples

Choose one of 11 pickup points: central hotels, the archaeological museum or, for cruise passengers, the Stazione Marittima.

  2. Seventy minutes in Sorrento

About an hour's drive to Sorrento for 70 minutes of free time, then another hour on the coast road to Positano.

  3. Positano, then Amalfi

A photo stop above Positano and 75 minutes in the village, then an hour's drive to Amalfi for an hour and a half.

  4. Back to Naples

About 75 minutes back to Naples, with drop-off at the same points used in the morning.

How the Day Works

The Sorrento, Positano and Amalfi Day, Stop by Stop

Worldtours' 8.5-hour day splits about evenly between the road and the towns: four driving legs add up to roughly four hours, and you get a little over four hours of free time across three stops. Here is the order, with the minutes from the listing.

  1. Pickup in Naples — Choose one of 11 pickup points when you book, from central hotels to the Archaeological Museum. The Stazione Marittima pickup is for cruise passengers only. Watch your email for the exact pickup time; the driver waits up to 10 minutes, and late bookings meet at Hotel Terminus at 08:30.
  2. Sorrento, 70 minutes — About an hour's drive brings you to Sorrento, on the Sorrentine Peninsula, for 70 minutes of free time in the old center, with a chance to taste limoncello.
  3. Photo stop above Positano — Another hour on the road takes you onto the Amalfi Coast. The minibus pauses for 15 minutes at a viewpoint over Positano's houses before going down into town.
  4. Positano, 75 minutes — Free time in Positano lasts 75 minutes. The beach is a short walk down, and the walk back up is all steps, so keep an eye on the clock.
  5. Amalfi, 1.5 hours — An hour later you reach Amalfi for 1.5 hours. The $99 option includes a set lunch at a local restaurant; otherwise you pick your own spot. The optional boat ride costs €15 per person, added at booking or paid on site.
  6. Back to Naples — The drive back takes about 75 minutes to the same set of drop-off points. The operator says the timings can change with the season, so treat each stop's minutes as a guide.

Where to Stay

Where to Stay in Naples for Amalfi Coast Tours

Most Amalfi Coast day tours collect guests in central Naples and ferries leave from Molo Beverello, so sleep near the port, the station or the seafront.

Municipio and the Port

Molo Beverello ferries and the Stazione Marittima cruise berths are a short walk away, and Via Medina hotels are tour pickup points. Busy and urban, with Toledo shopping streets next door.

Piazza Garibaldi and Napoli Centrale

Starhotels Terminus on Piazza Garibaldi is the meeting point for several tours, and the Circumvesuviana to Sorrento and the Salerno trains leave from the station. The area around the station is busy and less polished.

Lungomare and Chiaia

Quieter seafront hotels on Via Partenope with Bay of Naples views; Royal Continental is a pickup point on the most-reviewed tour. Plan on a taxi or a longer walk to Molo Beverello.

Planning Guide

How to Choose an Amalfi Coast Tour from Naples

Six kinds of day out of Naples, the towns each one reaches, and what to sort out before you book.

Choose your experience

Day tours from Naples fall into six kinds. They differ in how you travel, which towns you reach and what you pay, so choose the kind of day first and the tour second. Prices are per person on GetYourGuide, checked October 2026.

A shared day trip by road

A minibus or coach collects you in Naples, drives the coast road and gives you free time in two or three towns. Worldtours’ From Naples: Sorrento, Positano & Amalfi Premium Tour is the most-reviewed of the 121 Naples-departure Amalfi Coast listings compared on GetYourGuide: 4.8 from 18,989 reviews, 8.5 hours, from $71 without lunch (our breakdown). Amalfi Coast day trips from Naples compares the other coach days.

A boat day on the water

On a boat day you ride from Naples to a harbor and see the coast from the sea, with free time ashore in Amalfi and Positano. HP Travel’s Boat Tour of Amalfi, Positano and Ravello is the most-reviewed boat tour on this site, 4.5 from 5,597 reviews, from $105 (our breakdown). Boats depend on the season and the sea; Amalfi Coast boat tours sets out the options.

A small group in a minivan

A smaller vehicle can reach places a big coach cannot, and you share the day with fewer people. HP Travel’s Positano, Amalfi and Sorrento Small Group Tour caps the group at 13 and costs $62, the lowest real-date price among the 24 tours with a page here. Small-group tours explains what “small” means on each listing.

A private driver for your party

Private days are priced per person but fall sharply as your party grows. On Viator, the Private Amalfi Coast Tour: Scenic Positano, Amalfi & Ravello works out at about $273 each when two travel and about $168 each for four. Private Amalfi Coast tours compares drivers, guides and party sizes.

A shore excursion from the cruise port

If your ship docks in Naples, the return time matters more than the towns. Several tours collect you at the port, and some day trips offer a cruise-terminal pickup. Cruise excursions lists the port options and how to match the return time to your ship.

Pompeii and the coast in one day

Combo tours add the ruins to one or two towns. Worldtours’ Amalfi Coast and Pompeii Full Experience Tour gives you 2 hours in Amalfi and a 2-hour guided walk in Pompeii, entry ticket included, from $90 (our breakdown). Pompeii and Amalfi Coast tours compares the three combos.

Still unsure? Which Amalfi Coast tour to book from Naples gives one pick per kind of traveler, from families to cruise passengers.

Where will you go?

Four places appear on almost every itinerary, and only three of them are on the Amalfi Coast.

Positano is the steep one, a town of staircases that climbs from the beach at Spiaggia Grande, with the majolica-tiled dome of Santa Maria Assunta near the water. Most tours stop here, but read the line: Giromondo’s Exclusive Tour of Amalfi Coast gives Positano a 15-minute photo stop outside the town, and NapoliCityVision’s Sorrento, Positano and Amalfi Small Luxury Tour goes down into Positano only when traffic and parking allow. Among the road tours on this site, Beducci’s $73 Amalfi Coast Day Trip in Positano & Amalfi gives Positano the longest stop, 3 hours (our breakdown).

Amalfi was an independent maritime republic until 1073, and its 11th-century Duomo di Sant’Andrea stands above the main square. Nearly every tour reaches it, and the boat days give it the most time: 3.5 hours on HP Travel’s boat tour when you skip the Ravello option.

Ravello sits on the hill above Amalfi, quieter, with the gardens of Villa Rufolo (€8 standard ticket, sold only on site). Three shared road tours visit Positano, Amalfi and Ravello and skip Sorrento, and none of them includes the villa entry. Our Positano, Amalfi and Ravello guide weighs that day.

Sorrento is not an Amalfi Coast town. It lies on the Sorrentine Peninsula, in the Metropolitan City of Naples, while the Amalfi Coast towns belong to the Province of Salerno. On a “Sorrento, Positano and Amalfi” day you visit two Amalfi Coast towns plus Sorrento, usually with a limoncello tasting. That suits many first-timers, and the itineraries page sets the two classic routes side by side.

Boat vs road: which is better

Start with the season. Road tours run all year. The NLG ferries from Molo Beverello to Amalfi and Positano run from 1 April to early November in 2026, and hydrofoils can be cancelled in rough seas. Some road tours also change with the season: Beducci’s day trip crosses from Positano to Amalfi by ferry from April to October and by bus from November to March.

Then think about comfort. The coast road is narrow and winding, and Touring Italy warns that its shore excursion does not suit anyone prone to carsickness. On the water, Worldtours says its hydrofoil cruise is not for people prone to seasickness. Choose the motion you handle better.

Time ashore differs too. Boat days give you long stops in Amalfi, but the transfers are long: HP Travel drives you to the port of Torre del Greco before you sail, and a few reviewers felt they spent much of the day getting there and back. On Worldtours’ road day, the driving legs add up to about four hours of the 8.5, with the coast views on the way.

For a summer day with calm seas, a boat gives you the view from the water. For a winter date, a tight schedule or a party that dislikes boats, go by road. Amalfi Coast boat tours compares the boat days with the plain ferry ticket.

Planning your day trip

Pickup. Most road tours collect you at hotels or central points in Naples. Worldtours offers 11 pickup points, from the Archaeological Museum to the Stazione Marittima (that one for cruise passengers only). Beducci uses bus stops from Molo Beverello at 08:10 onward, and HP Travel’s small-group day leaves only from Starhotels Terminus in Piazza Garibaldi. Where to stay in Naples for Amalfi Coast tours matches neighborhoods to pickup points.

Travel times. Worldtours allows about an hour from Naples to Sorrento, and Beducci about 1.5 hours to Positano. Ferries, trains and buses are covered in how to get from Naples to the Amalfi Coast.

Season and weather. In Naples, October and November are the wettest months, with 135.5 mm and 152.1 mm of rain on average, and July is the driest. Worldtours runs its day with at least 2 travelers from April to October and at least 4 from November to March, so a winter booking can be cancelled if too few people sign up.

Free time and lunch. A “photo stop” of 15 minutes is not a visit, so read the minutes for each town. Lunch is usually extra: Worldtours charges $99 with a set lunch against $71 without. The optional boat ride in Amalfi costs €15 per person, paid on site, and Villa Rufolo charges €8, so carry some euros in cash.

Mobility. Positano is all steps, and most listings say they are not suitable for wheelchair users. Di Sarno’s Group Tour to Positano, Amalfi, Ravello takes folding wheelchairs and strollers if you tell the operator in advance.

When you know your date and the kind of day you want, check availability for the Worldtours day, or compare the four main options in the table above.

What Travelers Say

4.8/5 from 18989 verified GetYourGuide travelers

Ratings and review counts are the operators' live figures on GetYourGuide and Viator and may shift slightly day to day.

"I recommend this tour. We had a great guide, Maria. The driver, Antonio L., was also always on time and got us everywhere we needed to go. Amazing views, fantastic locations. Well worth it."

Krzysztof

"Imma is a charming and friendly tour guide with a great sense of humour. Giovanni managed to find an alternative route amidst the ongoing fuel strike and managed to find a route which still kept us on time - magic. it would have been great to do a few stops at some of the very impressive view points along the way."

Inga

"It was a good trip. However, we were under the impression that a boat cruise along the coast was an option. When we arrived in Amalfi, the guide said, “Oh no. We don’t have time for that.” The cruise was the main reason we booked as we had been to Sorrento and Positano last December."

GetYourGuide traveler

"A good trip. The Guide was helpful, informative and friendly. We had time for a look at the towns. The lunch was good. A few stops along the coastline for photographs would have been good idea."

Kenneth

"Excellent tour the guide Inna was brilliant and our driver Jiradi was great finding ways to get past road closures and getting us there on time. Great pack excellent all round"

claire

"Lovely trip, I wish we could stay up to two hours at each location so it wouldn’t feel rushed."
