How to Get from Naples to the Amalfi Coast
Every way from Naples to the Amalfi Coast: day tours, the seasonal ferry from Molo Beverello, train and SITA bus, train and boat via Salerno, a driver or a car.
The simplest way from Naples to the Amalfi Coast is a guided day tour: a coach or minivan collects you in Naples and drives you over the Sorrentine Peninsula, with shared days from $62 per person (checked October 2026). From 1 April to early November you can also take NLG’s direct ferry from Molo Beverello to Amalfi or Positano, about €32 each way.
Outside the ferry season, go by public transport: the Circumvesuviana train to Sorrento and a SITA bus along the coast, or a mainline train to Salerno and a Travelmar boat, which keeps a timetable all year. Driving yourself is possible, though the coast road is narrow and busy.

Going with a guided day tour
A tour takes care of every connection, and road tours run all year. Tramvia’s From Naples: Amalfi Coast Day Trip in Positano & Amalfi shows how one works. The coach leaves Molo Beverello at 08:10 and stops at seven more points in central Naples until 08:55, then reaches Positano around 11:00. You get 3 hours there on your own, then cross to Amalfi by ferry from April to October (by bus from November to March) for about 2 more hours before the drive back.
It costs $73 per person, lasts 9 hours and is rated 4.6 from 3,136 GetYourGuide reviews. A host travels on board, and a digital audioguide covers the sights. There is no hotel pickup, so walk to the nearest stop. Our breakdown has the full pickup list.
Other road days add Sorrento or Ravello. HP Travel’s From Naples: Positano, Amalfi and Sorrento Small Group Tour is the lowest-priced of the tours with a page on this site at $62, for up to 13 people from Starhotels Terminus. Worldtours’ From Naples: Sorrento, Positano & Amalfi Premium Tour, at $71, is the most-reviewed (4.8 from 18,989) and collects from 11 points including several hotels.
You can also go by sea on a tour: HP Travel drives you 15 minutes to a port and continues by boat, from $105. These run only in the boat season; the boat tours page compares them. To pick a route, start with the day trips page or our guide to which tour to book.
Taking the direct ferry from Molo Beverello
NLG sails from Molo Beverello, the pedestrian-only fast-craft pier about five minutes’ walk from Municipio station on metro Line 1. Its 2026 timetables are headed 1 April to 15 November, but most departures carry an end date of 3 November, so count on early November as the end of the season.
Departures from Naples to Amalfi are listed at 08:35, 10:00, 10:40 (with a change of boat at Capri), 14:40 and 15:35. Coming back, boats leave Amalfi at 08:54, 10:30, 15:45 and 17:00, and Positano at 09:15, 10:55, 16:24 and 16:35. The 08:35 out and the 17:00 back give you most of a day in Amalfi.
NLG charges €32.50 one way to Amalfi and €32.00 to Positano, €65.00 return to either; the 10:40 sailing costs less (€26 to Amalfi). Luggage is €5 per piece each way. Fares include a fuel surcharge that can change. NLG does not publish journey times; resellers list about 80 minutes to Positano and 110 minutes to Amalfi.
Arrive about 15 minutes before departure. In rough seas hydrofoils can be suspended, so keep a back-up plan for the return. NLG also sells a fixed day on GetYourGuide, From Naples: Ferry to Amalfi and Positano, at $83 per person with about 3 hours in Amalfi and 2 hours 20 minutes in Positano. The Naples to Amalfi ferry guide and Naples to Positano ferry guide cover tickets and timings in detail.

By train and bus through Sorrento
The Circumvesuviana leaves from Napoli Garibaldi, beside the central station, and takes 70 to 75 minutes to Sorrento, its terminus. Trains run about every 30 minutes, from 05:39 to 22:14 on the timetable in force since 28 March 2026. A single costs about €4.50 to €5. The reserved-seat Campania Express was suspended from 1 October 2026.
In Sorrento, change to the SITA SUD bus for Positano and Amalfi. Tickets are not sold on board: buy them at tobacconists, newsstands, bars or the kiosk at the Sorrento Circumvesuviana station. Singles cost about €2.40 to Positano and €3.40 to Amalfi in September 2026, and the COSTIERASITA 24-hour ticket was €10. SITA changed its fares on 1 October 2026, so check the new price at the kiosk.
Buses run all year, with fewer departures in winter and none after about 10 p.m. Seats are not guaranteed. From May to October expect queues, especially for the afternoon bus from Positano back to Sorrento. Sorrento itself is on the Sorrentine Peninsula, not on the Amalfi Coast.
By train to Salerno, then by boat
Mainline trains from Napoli Centrale reach Salerno in 35 to 40 minutes. Travelmar boats leave from Piazza Concordia, by Salerno station, and from Molo Manfredi. The direct boat to Amalfi takes 35 minutes and costs €12, with about ten departures a day; some stopping runs call at Vietri sul Mare, Cetara, Maiori and Minori and take an hour. Positano is 70 minutes and €17.
Travelmar’s timetable is published as a year-round service, but sailings can be cancelled in bad weather. Each leg needs its own ticket, sold at the port office until 30 minutes before departure or online. One carry-on bag up to 45 x 35 x 20 cm is included and extra bags cost €3, which makes this a good route if you are moving to a hotel on the coast with luggage.
With a private driver or taxi
A driver collects you at your door and waits in each town. Visit Amalfi Coast’s private day on Viator costs about $273 each for two and about $168 each for four. Chauffeured cars and taxis are exempt from the coast road’s plate rule. Naples taxis use fixed fares for trips out of the city, and you must agree the fare before you get in. The private tours page compares prices by group size.
Driving yourself
From Molo Beverello it is about 62 km to Amalfi and about 59 km to Positano, roughly an hour each without traffic. The last stretch follows the SS163 Amalfitana, which runs roughly 35 to 40 km from Vietri sul Mare to Positano and is about 7 m wide for two-way traffic. Heavy rain can close it for rockfall.
An odd/even plate rule covers the SS163 between Vietri sul Mare and Positano on set days, from 10:00 to 18:00. In 2026 it applied from 30 March to 6 April and from 24 April to 2 May, then on weekends and public holidays until 31 October. From 1 November there are no restrictions until next season. Hotel guests with a confirmed booking are exempt on arrival and departure days, and motorbikes are unrestricted.
In Positano, a ZTL covers via Pasitea, piazza dei Mulini and via C. Colombo around the clock for vehicles with more than five seats, at €5 per transit paid online at ztlpositano.it. Paying does not let you stop or park there. On the Sorrento side, viaduct works on the SS145 have brought traffic lights and alternating one-way traffic since 19 October 2026. Ask your hotel about parking before you set off.
