Naples to Positano Day Trip
Positano as a day trip from Naples: the time each tour gives you in town, the seasonal ferry, bus and car options, and what to do with the hours you get.
Positano works well as a day trip from Naples. By road it is about 59 km from the port, roughly an hour without traffic, and from April to early November NLG ferries sail there direct from Molo Beverello. Of the tours on this site, Tramvia’s Positano and Amalfi day gives you the longest stay in town: 3 hours of free time, from $73 per person (checked October 2026).
For Positano plus Sorrento and Amalfi, the Naples Official Tour: Amalfi Positano Sorrento & boat ride from Naples bay tour takes its minivan into the center of Positano for an hour at Marina Grande. It costs from $79 per person, or $93 with a boat ride in Amalfi, and is rated 4.8 from 2,216 GetYourGuide reviews.

Free time in town or a view from above
Read where a tour stops before you compare prices. Positano climbs from sea level to over 400 m, and staircases link the upper village with the beach. A stop on the road above town gives you the famous view; free time down in the lanes lets you reach the beach, the church and the shops.
Some tours give only the view. Giromondo’s From Naples: Exclusive Tour of Amalfi Coast lists a 15-minute panoramic stop outside Positano, then spends its time in Sorrento, Amalfi and Ravello. NapoliCityVision’s From Naples: Sorrento, Positano and Amalfi Small Luxury Tour goes down into Positano only if traffic and parking allow; otherwise you get a panoramic stop and a visit to Ravello instead.
Others take you into the center. The featured Naples bay tour day includes Positano access and parking fees, so its minivan reaches the town center. Gray Line’s guide drops you in Piazza Amerigo Vespucci, by the beach, before your free time. Worldtours’ days start with a 15-minute photo stop and then give you 75 minutes in town.
On your trip, an hour in Positano is mostly the walk down to Spiaggia Grande, a look around and the walk back up. A few reviewers found the climb took longer than they expected, and one felt the tour leader headed straight for the beach with no time in the upper town. Wear comfortable shoes and keep an eye on the meeting time.
Going by ferry in season
From 1 April to early November, NLG sails direct from Molo Beverello to Positano. Its 2026 timetable lists departures from Naples at 08:35, 10:00, 10:40, 14:40 and 15:35, and from Positano back to Naples at 09:15, 10:55, 16:24 and 16:35. Most sailings carry an end date of 3 November. A reseller lists the crossing at about 80 minutes; NLG does not publish a time.
An adult ticket costs €32.00 one way and €65.00 return, a child aged 2 to 12 pays €18.50 one way, and the 10:40 departure costs €30.00. Luggage is €5 per piece. Boats land at the pier on Spiaggia Grande, so you step off straight onto the beach. Arrive about 15 minutes before departure, and remember that rough seas can suspend hydrofoils.
Taking the 08:35 out and the 16:24 back gives you most of the day in Positano. You can add Amalfi by NLG’s local boat, about 20 to 25 minutes and €13 one way. Two fixed sea days on GetYourGuide do the timing for you. NLG’s From Naples: Ferry to Amalfi and Positano costs $83 and gives about 2 hours 20 minutes in Positano after Amalfi (or about 1 hour 45 minutes if Positano comes first). Worldtours’ Positano & Amalfi Full-Day Cruise from Naples costs $109, with staff on board and about 2 hours 20 minutes in Positano.
After early November the Naples ferries stop, and from November to March no hydrofoils link Positano with Sorrento or Capri either, so from Naples you go by road. Travelmar keeps a year-round timetable from Salerno. The Naples to Positano ferry guide covers tickets and timings in more detail.

Going on your own by bus or car
The cheapest way is the Circumvesuviana train from Napoli Garibaldi to Sorrento, 70 to 75 minutes for about €4.50 to €5, then a SITA bus to Positano. A single was about €2.40 in September 2026, before SITA’s fare change on 1 October. Buy bus tickets before you board, at a tobacconist, newsstand, bar or the kiosk at Sorrento station.
Buses run all year but seats are not guaranteed. From May to October the afternoon bus from Positano back to Sorrento often has long queues, so leave yourself a margin for the last train.
By car it is about 59 km from Molo Beverello, roughly 65 minutes without traffic. In 2026 an odd/even plate rule applied on the coast road on weekends and holidays until 31 October, with no restrictions from 1 November. Positano’s ZTL charges vehicles with more than five seats €5 per transit and does not let you park inside it. For a car with a driver, see the private tours page; every mode is compared in the Naples to Amalfi Coast guide.
What to do with one, two or three hours
With an hour, walk down to Spiaggia Grande and look into Santa Maria Assunta, the church with the majolica-tiled dome and a 13th-century Byzantine icon of a black Madonna. Then start back up in good time.
With two hours, add lunch or a swim at Spiaggia Grande. Sea temperatures on the Neapolitan Riviera average 23.6 °C (74 °F) in June, 26.0 °C in August and 21.5 °C (71 °F) in October. Some tour listings suggest bringing swimwear in summer.
With three hours, walk on to Fornillo, Positano’s second beach. Arienzo and La Porta are reached by footpath or by boat, so allow for the walk. Tramvia’s day uses its afternoon to cross to Amalfi by ferry in summer.
